Concerns about choosing small energy providers are preventing many consumers from saving money, a study has found.

Residents could be saving £337 million on their bills by switching to one of the lesser-known firms, but 35 per cent will not make the move because they fear such companies could go out of business, according to research by uSwitch.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch, said: "Unfortunately, when it comes to energy suppliers many consumers are caught in a trap – they're unhappy with the Big Six, they like what smaller suppliers have to offer, but they're too frightened to try one out."

Ms Robinson stressed that smaller suppliers provide competitive prices and a "genuine alternative" to larger companies.

A separate study from uSwitch recently found that one in four UK households have been sent an incorrect bill from their energy provider.

Also, 14 per cent have received the wrong statement on more than one occasion.
