Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) has advised local residents to ensure that their flue accessories remain clean this winter.

During the winter of 2009, fire crews in the area had to attend 102 chimney fires throughout the county, with 20 of them happening during the month of December, according to CambridgeFirst.co.uk.

Andy Tucker, risk manager at CFRS, said: "Most chimney fires could easily be avoided if the chimney had been swept regularly – as the vast majority are caused by a build up of soot and debris in the chimney."

Meanwhile, the Northwich Guardian has spoken to the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS), which has urged homeowners to be cautious when using heating appliances this winter.

Mark Cashin, deputy chief fire officer, told the website that residents should sweep their chimneys according to the type of fuel that they burn.

CFRS has treated around 15 chimney fires in the last two weeks, with eight of the incidents happening in the Chester and Cheshire West areas.
