Residents have been advised to close their fireplace dampers in order to save money over the Christmas season.

There are many other ways that people can alter how they use flue accessories to reduce their bills this winter. For example, people can insulate their properties, which will help to save a substantial amount of energy, according to Verdo Renewables.

Alistair McGlynn, UK sales manager for Verdo Renewables, said: "It's been incredibly warm this winter so far, but with the mercury dropping now is a good time to start thinking about getting your winter fuel sorted."

Mr McGlynn noted that there are good savings to be made by opting for a briquette rather than seasoned logs.

These tips follow similar guidance from E.ON, which told landlords to undertake boiler checks as a means of ensuring that their heating appliances are not hit by issues this winter.

People should also check that their thermostat is correctly set, the group recommended.
