Solar panels are set to be fitted alongside flue accessories at South Ribble Council's main building in an effort to decrease bills.

The Civic Centre in Layland will boast photovoltaic technology on its roof, which will be used to capture energy from sunlight, enhancing the council's green credentials in the process, according to the Lancashire Evening Post.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting, Martin Fahy, finance and resources chief, said: "The Civic Centre building is a prime site for the use of photovoltaic technology and its design lends itself to being a near perfect site for installation."

Mr Fahy noted that the panels would not present a visual impact, as they would be hidden by the parapet wall surrounding the roof.

This news comes after STV reported that South Lanarkshire College won the UK Green Gown award.

It is the first Scottish college to ever win the award in its seven-year history.
