Businesses are likely to pay more attention to the importance of the carbon reduction commitment (CRC) next year, an expert has predicted.
Despite interest falling in the scheme since the registration period for its first stage, demand is expected to increase in the spring, a spokesperson from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has commented.
Michael Reid, senior associate at the group, said: "People have tended to bury their heads in the sand a little bit until now, but as soon as it hits their pocket in April, I think we are going to see a lot more work flowing out of this."
Mr Reid remarked that the CRC will pick up "for sure" next year when the first allowances take place.
Last month, energy secretary Chris Huhne spoke to the Grantham Institute, explaining that confidence should be built in the ways that carbon emissions are measured.
Mr Huhne noted that an effective measurement, reporting and verification system will give assurance that action is being taken.
