Homeowners should not tackle electrical work unless they are competent or qualified in the field, according to an expert.

Anna-Marie DeSouza, editor of Build It + Home Improvement magazine, said that it is important to contact the local council to find out what the building regulations are before any major work is tackled.

With regards to plumbing, the DIY commentator said that it depends on what the job is as to whether it should be attempted.

Gas plumbing should only be carried out by someone who is accredited by the Gas Safe Register, which is an official list of all those who are qualified to carry out such work.

The Register noted that one in three people say that they would fit a gas appliance themselves in order to save money, despite the risk of leaks, fires and explosions.

Ms DeSouza went on to say that the majority of plumbing projects could be attempted, however if in doubt it is worth getting in an expert.
