Homeowners have been advised to winter-proof their flue accessories as the winter months arrive.

People should ensure their loft insulation is of sufficient thickness and in good condition, with a depth of 11 inches recommended, according to the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA).

As well as loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and double-glazing can protect homes in winter and save money, the group has recommended.

Nick Salmon, managing director of Harrison Murray, which is a member agent of NAEA, said: "Some simple but effective maintenance will not only protect your home, but could save you money and make the difference between a buyer making an offer or walking away."

Other tips that people should consider include draught-stripping, which will lower draughts significantly while making homes warmer and saving an average of £20 a year.

Additionally, it has been advised that homeowners should bleed their radiators, as doing so will eliminate any excess air that can cause increased bills.
