Homeowners have been advised how they can defend themselves against the threats of carbon monoxide, which can be released from flue accessories.

The gas is colourless and is generated from the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels as well as wood, and it can be incredibly difficult for residents to detect, according to experts from the Pacific Gas and Electric Company.

In order to protect themselves from carbon monoxide poisoning, homeowners should install a carbon monoxide detector, refrain from using propane heaters indoor and ensure that chimneys are always venting efficiently.

Earlier this month, CitizenTimes.com reported that an improperly maintained chimney caused a chimney fire in North Carolina.

The blaze occurred in the state's Asheville region, though no injuries were suffered.

Buddy Thompson, head of the Asheville-Buncombe Arson Task Force told the website: "This has been a cold winter and people are burning (woodstoves) more than they normally would. (Creosote) builds up. Make sure your chimneys are clean."
