Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) has warned residents to ensure that heating appliances such as flue liners for woodburners are in a stable condition this season.

As temperatures remain low, many homeowners consider using open fires to help reduce their heating bills, though it is imperative that they know the potential dangers of those that are improperly prepared.

Head of community safety Stuart Skilton said: "Unfortunately, it is often the more vulnerable members of the community who are most at risk and we are appealing to people to really look out for their family, friends and neighbours this winter."

Mr Skilton also noted that smoke alarms must be installed in all homes, while escape routes should be planned in case fires endanger property owners.

Meanwhile, Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service recorded a high number of chimney fires during this past December.

The number of December chimney fires in the region rose from 24 in 2009 to 27 this past Christmas.
