Shiny surfaces could be one of this year's big kitchen trends, according to an industry expert.
Graham Barnard, owner of Matrix Kitchens, said that there will be a move towards a "warmer and more sophisticated style" in 2012.
This could include the use of shiny surfaces, cool greys and warm woods in the cooking space, fitting perfectly alongside chrome appliances, such as ovens, microwaves and ventilation.
"I see too many people that compromise. They want a modern kitchen, but worry that it will not work in their period home, so water down their designs. This means they spend a massive amount of money [and] not get what they really want," said Mr Barnard.
He advised homeowners to decide what they want and "go for it".
The kitchen is probably the busiest room in the home, with family and friends meeting for breakfast and the evening meal.
Many will choose to stand and chat while cooking is taking place, which means that it is important to have a stylish room, and one which also benefits from good ventilation to create a comfortable atmosphere.
